Secondary School Programs
Although the majority of Ontario secondary school programs provide the standard curriculum, there are a few specialized programs within the secondary schools as listed below.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
The IB program prepares students for university-level coursework,
develops research and critical thinking skills, and emphasizes international understanding. The IB DP is academically demanding and requires strong time management, organization, and commitment from students.
Advanced Placement (AP)
Schools must meet specific criteria and adhere to AP program guidelines set by the College Board, which administers AP courses internationally.
Each AP course is designed to reflect the content, scope, and rigor of college-level courses and is taught by qualified teachers who are approved by the College Board. Depending on their AP exam scores, students may earn college credits or advanced placement at universities in Canada, the US, and other countries.
Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM)
Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) in Ontario are specialized programs that allow high school students to focus
their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
Enriched or Gifted Courses
Enriched or gifted courses in high school are designed to provide advanced and challenging academic opportunities
for students who demonstrate exceptional abilities and intellectual potential.
Dual Credit Program
Dual credit programs in Ontario secondary schools are designed to provide students with opportunities to earn both secondary school credits and college credits simultaneously.
Students earn both a high school credit towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and a college credit that may be transferrable to other post-secondary institutions, depending on their policies.
